Scud Mountain Boys, an American alternative country band, formed in 1991 in Northampton, Massachusetts. The group consisted of Joe Pernice, Stephen Desaulniers, Bruce Tull, and Tom Shea. Initially known as the Scuds, their early work was heavily influenced by electric rock. However, a pivotal moment occurred when they began playing acoustic country songs around a kitchen table, leading to a more enjoyable performance style that resonated with audiences. The band released three albums before disbanding: Pine Box (1995), Dance the Night Away (1995), and Massachusetts (1996). The latter was their debut on Sub Pop Records. In 1997, they released The Early Year, a compilation containing slightly reordered versions of Dance the Night Away and Pine Box. After disbanding in 1997, Joe Pernice later formed the Pernice Brothers. The band reunited in 2012 and released their fourth album, Do You Love the Sun, in July 2013. Lead guitarist Bruce Tull died after a brief illness in Tulsa, on June 22, 2026, at the age of 71.
