Biography

Samuel Blythe Price was an American jazz and boogie-woogie pianist and bandleader born on October 6, 1908, in Honey Grove. Price achieved professional recognition for a career that began after he studied the piano with the musician Portia Marshall Washington and performed as a singer and dancer in local venues in the mid-1920s. He achieved professional recognition for being hired by the label Decca Records as a session pianist in 1938. Price achieved professional recognition for leading the ensemble Texas Bluesicians and partnering with the musician Henry "Red" Allen. He achieved professional recognition for performing as an accompanist for the musician Sister Rosetta Tharpe and the musician Lester Young. His musical career included performing at the venue CafÃ© Society Uptown starting in 1943. Price achieved professional recognition for leading a band on a tour of France, Spain, Portugal, and Tunisia between 1955 and 1956 under the program Les Jeunesses musicales de France. He achieved professional recognition for performing as a mainstay at the West End Bar during the 1970s and 1980s. Price achieved professional recognition for being crowned the King of Boogie-Woogie by the musician Eubie Blake in 1977. He died of a heart attack on April 14, 1992, in New York City.
