Biography

A Belgian songwriter born of a Flemish Belgian mother and an Algerian Kabyle father, Samir Barris began his career in the late 1990s as drummer with the group Melon Galia, who shot to fame in 1998 with the EP Vous Me Quittez Déjà, featuring their biggest hit "L'occasion de me taire". Finally, after three EPs, an album(Les Embarras du Quotidien in 2000) and concerts in Belgium, France, Canada and the USA, the band split up in 2004. Samir Barris immediately bounced back with two solo albums that quickly established him as a rising star on the French-speaking scene: Quel Effet? in 2006, with the track "Le Fossé " laying the foundations for his poetic pop, and Tenter l'Atout in 2009, both acclaimed beyond the flat country. In 2010, he formed the duo Ici Baba with multi-instrumentalist Catherine De Biasio, and released their first album, Chat Qui Se Cache, which won them the Prix Charles Cros for children's records and went on to over 600 performances. The following year, accompanied by singer Séverine Cayron and bassist Nicholas Yates, he formed the group Le Beau Geste and released their first album, Sur Ma Peau Nue. After the album Ma Mie Forêt with Ici Baba in 2014, he created Le Ba Ya Trio in 2016 with Benoît Leseure and released the album Tour Du Monde, which won them an Octave de la musique, as well as a special mention from the "Chanson à l'école" program. In 2019, Samir Barris returns solo with his third album Fin d'Été.
