Biography

Born into a musical family in Southampton, England in July 1975, Sally Matthews is an operatic soprano. She began studying singing when she was 10 years old with singer Cynthia Jolly and continued studying with her until she was 18. She attended The Gregg School before continuing her studies at Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Sally Matthews made her professional debut at the Royal Opera House in 2001, performing in Verdi’s Falstaff. Her BBC Proms debut came later that year in Vaughan Williams’ Serenade to Music. She was involved with BBC Radio 3’s group of New Generation Artists from 2001-2003. Sally Matthews released her debut album, Songs, in 2004. She also appeared on recordings of Orff: Carmina Burana (2005), Mozart / Haydn: Concert Arias / Symphony No. 103 ‘Drum Roll’ (2006), Beethoven’s Fidelio (2007), Britten: Double Concerto For Violin & Viola / Variations On A Theme Of Frank Bridge / Les Illuminations (2009), Poulenc: Dialogues Des Carmelites (2011), Brahms: German Requiem (2014), and Britten: Turn of the Screw (2022).
