Biography

Ryoji Ikeda, born 8 July 1966 in Gifu, Japan, is a Japanese composer and visual‑sound artist whose work focuses on raw sonic elements such as sine tones and noise. After early experimentation in Tokyo, his breakthrough came with the 1995 release 1000 fragments, followed by time and space (1998) and 0°C (2000). He continued to publish through Raster‑Noton and Touch, issuing dataplex (2005) and test pattern (2008), while collaborating with Carsten Nicolai under the name Cyclo. Ikeda’s installations have appeared at prestigious venues, including the TWA Flight Center exhibition (2004) and the Park Avenue Armory show The Transfinite (2011). He received the Golden Nica Award in 2001 and the Prix Ars Electronica Collide@CERN in 2014, leading to a residency at CERN where he developed the micro | macro project. His work remains influential in contemporary electronic and multimedia art, with ongoing exhibitions and catalogues worldwide.
