Heavy metal band Viper was formed in São Paulo, Brazil in 1985. Founded by guitarist Felipe Machado, vocalist Andre Matos, bassist / vocalist Pit Passarell, and guitarist Yves Passarell, the group took inspiration from Iron Maiden and other bands that had emerged from the NWOBHM (New Wave of British Heavy Metal) movement from the mid-1970s and early 1980s. They recorded their first demo tape, The Killera Sword, in 1985 and followed it up with their debut album, Soldiers of Sunrise, in 1987. After the release of their second album, Theatre of Fate (1989), vocalist Andre Matos left the group and bassist Pit Passarell took over vocals for the group. With Pit on vocals, the Viperâs sound became heavier with the release of their next album, Evolution (1992). While their next album, Coma Rage (1995), embraced thrash metal and punk rock, Viper changed their musical approach with Tem Pra Todo Mundo (1996). On the album, their first sung in Portuguese, the music veered towards a more commercial pop metal sound. However, the bandâs label went bankrupt, and Viper ceased all activities without officially calling it quits. With the band out of commission for the time being, they released Everybody Everybody â The Best of Viper in 1999. Two years later, the band began playing live again, although guitarist Yves Passarell decided to leave to focus on his own musical projects. Yvesâ brother Pit Passarell continued to play bass for Viper but stepped back as a lead vocalist, making way for new singer Ricardo Bocci. More line-up changes would happen by the time the group released the All My Life album in 2007. The band took another hiatus, and more line-up changes occurred before they resumed before playing live in 2012. By the time Viper released their next album, Timeless, in 2023, only guitarist Felipe Machado and bassist Pit Passarell remained from the groupâs original line-up, On September 27, 2024, Pit Passarell died from pancreatic cancer at the age of 56.
