Biography
Ruben Tagalog, born on October 17, 1922 in Iloilo, Philippines, was a singer and actor known for his contributions to Filipino music, particularly in the kundiman style. He gained initial recognition in the 1940s with his radio program Harana ni Ruben Tagalog, where he showcased his baritone voice through emotional renditions of songs like "Ramona" and "O Ilaw". Throughout his career, Tagalog released numerous albums including Heritage Series - Kumpisal (1994), Dalagang Pilipina (2008), and Ruben at Cely (2011). He was known for reviving traditional danza and balitaw songs, and was the first to popularize the Tagalog version of the Christmas carol "Ang Pasko ay Sumapit" in the early 1950s. Tagalog's notable collaborations include a duet album with Nora Hermosa called Duet in Visayan. He passed away on March 5, 1985. After his death, he was recognized as the "Father of Kundiman," and his songs continue to be featured on various radio programs.
