Rubber Rodeo was formed in Rhode Island in 1980 by vocalist and guitarist Bob Holmes, vocalist and keyboardist Trish Milliken, synthesizer player Gary Leib, pedalâsteel guitarist Eddie Stern, bassist Doug Allen and drummer Barc Holmes. The group blended newâwave energy with countryâwestern imagery, first gaining attention with the 1981 cover of Dolly Partonâs "Jolene", followed by the 1982 EP Rubber Rodeo and the 1982 EP She Had to Goâ¦, which showcased original tracks such as "Forbidden Valley" as well as country and western covers such as Ennio Morricone's 'The Good, The Bad and The Ugly". In 1984 Rubber Rodeo signed with Mercury Records and released the fullâlength Scenic Views; the single "Anywhere With You" peaked at number 86 on the Billboard Hot 100, and the accompanying video received substantial MTV airplay. The albumâs fusion of newâwave and country earned the band a Grammy nomination for their longâform Scenic Views video. In 1986 the group issued Heartbreak Highway, produced by Ken Scott, but the record failed to chart and the band was dropped by the label. Rubber Rodeo disbanded by the end of the decade; subsequent members pursued varied careers, with Bob Holmes entering production work and Gary Leib becoming a noted cartoonist. The bandâs legacy endures through recognition of their pioneering cowboy pop sound and the continued release of related projects such as the SUSS albums.
