Biography
Ruban Nielson (born 20â¯Februaryâ¯1980 in Darwin, Australia) is a Newâ¯Zealand singerâsongwriter who emerged from a musical family in Orewa, Auckland. After studying at Elam School of Fine Arts and winning the Sir Jamesâ¯Wallace art award in 2002, he coâfounded the punkâgarage band Theâ¯Mintâ¯Chicks with his brother Kody Nielson, releasing the EP Octagon, Octagon, Octagon (2003) and the album Screens (2009) before the group disbanded in 2010. Ruban Nielson then formed the psychedelic project Unknownâ¯Mortalâ¯Orchestra, releasing its selfâtitled debut in 2011, which earned the 2012 Taite Music Prize. Subsequent albums II (2013), MultiâLove (2015), Sexâ¯+â¯Food (2018), and V (2023) expanded his international reach. He has won two Aotearoa Music Awards, an APRA Silver Scroll, and a Taite Music Prize, establishing him as a key figure in Australasiaâs psychedelic revival. He teamed up with multi-instrumentalist Jared Mattson of The Mattson 2 on the joint instrumental album Fear, released in June 2026.
