Biography

Roy Davis Jr., born Roy Davis Earl Jr. in 1970 in Van Nuys, California, emerged from Chicagoâs house scene as a DJ and producer. Early exposure to pioneers such as Lilâ Louis and Marshall Jefferson prompted him to found the production company Phuture and later serve as an A&R scout for Strictly Rhythm while operating his own label, Undaground Therapy Muzik. His breakthrough came with the single âGabrielâ (1996), featuring Peven Everett, which reached number 22 on the UK Singles Chart following its 1997 reissue and sold over 200,000 copies. In 1999 he released the album Soul Electrica, followed by Chicago Forever (2004), and later issued the release Give It Up (2008). Notable singles such as âAbout Loveâ (2003) and âSomething Inside Of Meâ helped reinforce his presence on club floors worldwide. Roy Davis Jr. collaborated with artists including Eric Benet, Mary J. Blige, and Morcheeba, and contributed productions and remixes associated with Thomas Bangalterâs RoulÃ© label. In 2016, he announced a diagnosis of multiple sclerosis, leading to a temporary pause in performances; however, he continued to produce music as his health permitted. His work remains influential in the Chicago house canon, with enduring chart success and a legacy of innovative production.
