Biography

Roland Pidoux, born on October 29, 1946 in Paris, was a French cellist and academic teacher. He studied at the Conservatoire de Paris until 1966 with professors André Navarra, Jean Hubeau, and Joseph Calvet. Pidoux began his career as principal cellist of the Orchestre national de France from 1978 to 1987, where he collaborated with notable musicians such as Pierre Fournier, Mstislav Rostropovich, Jean-Pierre Rampal, and Isaac Stern. He was also a founding member of several ensembles, including the Via Nova Quartet, the Wanderer Trio, and Les Violoncelles Français. He also formed a chamber music trio with pianist Jean-Claude Pennetier and violinist Régis Pasquier. Pidoux's discography includes over 100 recordings, notably Maurice Ravel (2006), Rachmaninov: Trios Elégiaques n° 1 et n° 2 (2009), and Beethoven: L'oeuvre pour violoncelle et piano (2006). He was a professor at the Conservatoire de Paris from 1988 to 2012, where he has his son Raphaël Pidoux as student. He was also the father of oboist Gabriel Pidoux. Roland Pidoux died on September 21, 2025, at the age of 78.
