Biography

Roger Kynard Erickson, professionally known as Roky Erickson, was an American singer-songwriter who found fame in the 1960s with psychedelic rock band The 13th Floor Elevators. They released their debut album 'The Psychedelic Sounds of the 13th Floor Elevators', which contained the hit single 'You're Gonna Miss Me', in 1966. They released two more studio albums, 'Easter Everywhere' (1967) and 'Bull of the Woods' (1969), before Erickson was hospitalised in 1968 and diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia. Following successful treatment, Roky returned to making music in the 1970s with new band Roky Erickson and the Aliens, releasing a self-titled album and the single 'Two Headed Dog (Red Temple Prayer)'. Despite continued struggles with his mental health, he went on to release a number of solo albums, including 'True Love Cast Out All Evil' (2010), made appearances at the Coachella, Austin City Limits and South By Southwest music festivals and was the subject of the 2005 documentary 'You're Gonna Miss Me' before passing away on 31st May 2019.
