Biography

Richard Kraus, born on November 16, 1902, in Berlin, Germany, was a conductor. The son of Wagner tenor Ernst Kraus, Richard studied at the Hochschule für Musik Berlin under figures such as Otto Taubmann and Emil Nikolaus von Reznicek. His career began as a Korrepetitor at the Berliner Staatsoper in 1923. Kraus's directing career included roles at various orchestras and opera houses across Germany. He served as Chefdirigent in Halle (Saale) from 1937 to 1944 and later at the Städtische Oper Berlin from 1954 to 1961, now known as the Deutsche Oper Berlin. Kraus also led the Nordwestdeutsche Philharmonie in Herford until his retirement in 1969. Kraus passed away on April 11, 1978, in Kassel.
