Biography

Ricanstruction is a New York City-based Puerto Rican punk, hip hop, salsa, jazz, and reggae fusion musical group and artist collective formed in the mid-1990s. The founding lineup featured vocalist Alano P. Baez, known as “Not4Prophet”, bassist Arturo Rodriguez, drummer Joseph Rodriguez, and guitarist Eddie Alsina. The group gigged in local venues including CBGB and The Knitting Factory. In 1997, they released their debut EP, EPB. In 1998, the band became the first artist signed to CBGB Records by owner Hilly Kristal. Baez and the collective followed this with the albums Liberation Day in 1998, Abu Jamal in 1999, UnAmerican in 2001, and Love+Revolution in 2004. Due to their political activism, Tower Records Japan and Miami banned the sale of their records. After performing at a United Nations rally in 2006, the group became inactive. They resumed activity for a performance in 2010 as “The Dynamite Bros.”.
