Biography

Rhinoceros is an American rock band formed in 1967 through auditions conducted by Elektra Records. The group's lineup included John Finley on vocals and Michael Fonfara on keyboards among other notable musicians. Their initial steps involved recording backing tracks for David Ackles' debut album, released the following year. The band's self-titled debut Rhinoceros, produced by Paul Rothchild, was released in 1968 and featured several standout tracks, including "Apricot Brandy" which reached number 46 on the Billboard Charts. The album also included "I Will Serenade You", written by John Finley; this track was later covered by Three Dog Night as "Let Me Serenade You," reaching number 17 in the US in 1973. Their cover of "You're My Girl (I Don't Want To Discuss It)" was also notably covered in 1969 by Amen Corner and in 1970 by Rod Stewart. Rhinoceros released their subsequent albums, Satin Chickens, and Better Times Are Coming. The band faced significant lineup changes and struggled to meet Elektra Records' expectations. By the time of their second album, Rothchild and Mohawk were no longer involved with production; David Anderle took over for Satin Chickens. Following a series of member departures Rhinoceros disbanded in 1971.
