Raúl Francisco MartÃnezâMalo Jr., born 7â¯Augustâ¯1965 in Miami, Florida, was an American country singer, songwriter, and guitarist whose career spanned more than two decades. Growing up in a bilingual household, he began performing locally as a teenager, developing a powerful, expressive vocal style influenced by country, soul, and Latin music. He was both the lead singer and songwriter of the country music band The Mavericks, co-writing many of their tracks since 1989. After the disbanding of the Mavericks in the early 2000s, Malo pursued a solo career. His breakthrough came with the 2001 album Today, which establishing him as a rising talent. Malo continued to build his discography with the albums You're Only Lonely (2006), Lucky One (2009), Sinners & Saints (2010), and After Hours (2007), each receiving critical acclaim for its blend of traditional country and contemporary storytelling. In 2012 he released Around the World, a concept record that highlighted his international touring schedule. His last studio work, Say Less, dropped on 19â¯Mayâ¯2023 and included collaborations with several country veterans, solidifying his influence in the genre.
