Rajeev Taranath was born on October 17, 1932, in Bangalore, India. He began his musical journey as a vocalist under his father Pandit Taranath and gave his first public performance at age nine. By twenty, he was singing for All India Radio. Despite holding a PhD in Literature and working as a professor, Taranath decided to pursue music full-time, studying under Ali Akbar Khan in Calcutta until Khan died in 2009. Taranath released several albums, including Manan: Meditation (2008) and composed music for films such as Samskara, Kanchana Sita, and Kadavu. He performed extensively worldwide, including tours in Australia, Europe, Yemen, the United States, and Canada. Taranath received numerous awards, including the Padma Shri in 2019 and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1999-2000. He lived and taught in Mysore until his death on June 11, 2024.
