Biography

Racing Cars, a Welsh rock band formed in 1973 in the Rhondda Valley, Wales. The group consisted of Gareth Mortimer (guitarist/lead vocalist), Graham Hedley Williams (guitarist), Simon Davies (keyboardist and vocals), Colin Griffin (drummer), Chris Thomas (bassist), Robert James Wilding (drummer), David Land (bassist), Ray 'Alice' Ennis (guitarist), Paul Saurin (keyboards), Paul Rosser (drummer and vocals), Bob Watkins (bassist) and Dave Iles (guitarist). The band's breakthrough came with their debut single "They Shoot Horses, Don't They?", inspired by the film of the same name. Released in 1976, it peaked at Number 14 on the UK Singles Chart in 1977. Their debut album Downtown Tonight was released that year under Chrysalis Records. The band supported Bad Company on tour in 1976, playing notable venues such as Earls Court and York Theatre Royal. Racing Cars released several more albums, including Weekend Rendezvous and Bring On The Night, while their final album was Second Wind, which was released in October 2007. Despite their early success, the band ultimately acquired one-hit-wonder status. In 1980, Mortimer released a solo album titled Love Blind. Racing Cars reformed in 2000 and continued to play gigs across Europe until 2009. Gareth Mortimer died on December 17, 2015, at his home in Rhondda, Wales, from cancer at the age of 66.
