Biography
Rachel Kolly is a Swiss violinist who was born in 1981. She began playing the violin and piano at age five and studied at the Lausanne Conservatory, where she received diplomas for teaching the violin and for chamber music at age 15. Kolly continued her education at the University for Music and Drama in Berne under Igor Ozim and studied orchestration with Jean Balissat and composition with Michael Jarrell. She made her debut as a soloist at age 12 and has performed with international ensembles including the NHK Symphony Orchestra, the BBC Philharmonic, and the RAI National Symphony Orchestra. In 2010, Kolly became the first Swiss musician to sign with Warner Classics, releasing her debut album, Passion Ysaÿe, (2010). Her recording French Impressions (2011) won Best Recording of the Year in the concerto category at the International Classical Music Awards (ICMA) in 2012. Subsequent recordings include American Serenade (2012), Fin de siècle (2015), and Lyrical Journey (2017), the latter of which received a nomination for an ICMA award. Kolly received the Music Prize of the Canton of Vaud in 2017 and was appointed music director of a chamber music series in Switzerland in 2018. Her later discography includes Bach - Partitas (2020), Brahms - Sonatas (2024), and the album Ladies First (2026).
