Biography

Roman Isaakovitch Kofman was a Ukrainian conductor and violinist born on June 15, 1936, in Kiev. He graduated from the State Conservatory in 1961 with a degree in violin and later earned a conducting diploma in 1971. Kofman co-founded the Kyiv Chamber Orchestra in 1963, serving as its concertmaster before being appointed its principal conductor in 1990. He achieved international recognition for his tenure as the Generalmusikdirektor of the Beethoven Orchester Bonn from 2003 to 2008. During this period, he was awarded the ECHO Klassik prize and the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany. From 2012, Kofman also served as the principal conductor of the National Philharmonic of Ukraine. His extensive recording career included the project Shostakovich: Intégrale des Symphonies. Kofman was named a People's Artist of Ukraine in 2003 and remained an active figure in European classical music until his death in February 2026. His later discography featured the recording Liszt: Christus.
