A singer with a short-lived career, Q Lazzarus is associated with the song "Goodbye Horses", heard in the film The Silence of the Lambs. Born in Neptune Township, New Jersey, on December 12, 1960, Diane Luckey began singing in church before launching her career as a backup singer at Sigma Sound Studios in Philadelphia. While working as a cab driver and au pair, the singer enlisted the help of musicians to form the group Q Lazzarus, and recorded a demo without signing with a record company. It was while driving director Jonathan Demme that she caught his eye with her tape. Seduced, the filmmaker first used the song "Candle Goes Away" for the film Something Wild (1986), before choosing "Goodbye Horses " for Married to the Mob (1988) and The Silence of the Lambs (1991). Appearing in the following film Philadelphia, Luckey became the cult singer of "Goodbye Horses " and disappeared from the music scene. Now a bus driver, she died of septicemia on July 19, 2022 at the age of 61, after breaking her leg. Meanwhile, she began work on a documentary film about her by director Eva Aridjis. Released in 2025, Goodbye Horses: The Many Lives of Q Lazzarus is also the name of the soundtrack released by Sacred Bones Records, which ranks #18 on the UK independent album chart.
