Porca Véia (born Ãlio da Rosa Xavier on March 2, 1952, in Lagoa Vermelha, Rio Grande do Sul) was a singer, composer, and accordionist who helped modernize and popularize nativist dance music in southern Brazil while leading the baile ensemble Grupo Cordiona. Raised in a family of amateur musicians, he began performing as a child and, after winning numerous accordion contests, formed and directed Cordiona, taking a fandangueiro repertoire of bugios, xotes, and chamamés from community halls to major stages; along the way he guested with figures such as Kleiton & Kledir and became a regular draw across the South. The 2000s captured his live power on Porca Véia (2005) and culminated in the career-retrospective concert Porca Véia â 30 Anos de Sucessos ao Vivo (2014). Studio releases like Eu Gostei do Baile Véio ! (2010) and Cordeona de Alma Viva (2018) paired road-seasoned arrangements with signature titles including âGaiteiro por Demais,â âFandangueiro,â âMorena Ingrata,â and âLuz do Meu Rancho,â while De Toda Lida (2018) reaffirmed his songwriting voice late in the catalog. After a farewell show in 2013âfeaturing guests such as Renato Borghetti, Yamandu Costa, Daltro Bertussi, and Luiz Carlos Borgesâhe reduced touring but remained a touchstone of the gaúcho tradition. Porca Véia died in Novo Hamburgo on June 12, 2020, and his legacy continues both through ongoing reissues (including a 2025 De Toda Lida relaunch) and through Grupo Cordionaâs active lineup, which keeps his dance-floor repertoire in circulation for new audiences.
