Ismail Mohamed-Jan, known professionally as Pops Mohamed, was born on December 10, 1949 in Benoni, South Africa. He began his musical journey at a young age, earning the nickname "Pops" for his love of spinach. At 14, he joined The Valiants band and later had a hit with "Iâm a Married Man" as part of Childrenâs Society. In the late 1970s, Pops Mohamed played with jazz musicians Basil Coetzee and Sipho Gumede in Movement in the City. He studied jazz at the Fuba School of Music from 1979 to 1984 and began working as a sound engineer in 1981 and producer in 1988. Notable albums include How Far Have We Come? (2005), The Millennium Experience - Live and Unplugged in Europe (2008) and Harrison Thando (2013). Mohamed's work earned him nominations for the OKTV Award and South African Music Award (SAMA), including Kalamazoo 3 with Sipho Gumede. On December 4, 2025, Pops Mohamed died at the age of 75.
