Biography
Player, an American rock band, was formed on November 15, 1976, in Los Angeles, California. The group consisted of Ronn Moss (bass, vocals), Peter Beckett (guitar, vocals), JC Crowley (keyboard, guitar, vocals), and John Friesen (drums). Before forming Player, the members had various musical experiences; Moss had played in local bands since his teenage years, while Beckett had moved to the United States from Liverpool and collaborated with other musicians. The band's breakthrough came when they were signed to RSO Records by Robert Stigwood after impressing producers Dennis Lambert and Brian Potter with their live performance of "Baby Come Back." Their self-titled debut album Player was released in 1977, featuring the hit single "Baby Come Back", which became the Number 1 selling single in the United States that year. The band's subsequent albums included Danger Zone (1978) and Room With a View (1980). In December 1977, "Baby Come Back" was certified gold by both the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and the Canadian Recording Industry Association (CRIA). The band was named New Artist or Group of the Year by Billboard in 1978. Player continued to release albums throughout the 1980s and beyond, including Spies of Life (1982), Electric Shadow (1995), and Too Many Reasons (2013). In September 2007, they were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
