Biography

Platinum Hook was an American funk band from New York City formed in 1977. The group originally performed as The Soul Dukes before changing the name after Tina Renee Stanford joined in 1976. The lineup featured Stephen Daniels, Stanford, Robert Douglas, Elisha “Skipp” Ingram, Victor Jones, Robin David Corley, Glenn Wallace, and Kevin Jasper. The band signed with Motown and released the albums Platinum Hook (1978) and It's Time (1979). The single “Standing on the Verge (of Getting It on)” (1979) reached the Billboard charts in the United States and was a minor hit in the United Kingdom. Platinum Hook toured with acts including The Commodores, Kool & the Gang, and Sister Sledge and maintained a residency at The Cellar in New York City between 1977 and 1984. The group performed at the Kool Jazz Festival and appeared at the Apollo Theater in 1979. They later collaborated with Italian singer Loredana Bertè on an album and toured with her in Italy and the United States. After leaving Motown the band signed with RCA and released the mini-album Watching You (1983). Their manager Benjamin Ashburn died in 1982.
