Biography

Piirpauke, a Finnish band founded in 1974 by keyboardist-saxophonist Sakari Kukko. The band's name, meaning noise or racket, reflects the diverse sounds they incorporate into their compositions. They released their debut album Piirpauke in 1975 and gained significant traction with subsequent releases like Birgi Bühtüi (1981) and "Konevitsan kirkonkellot", a traditional Karelian melody that became one of their most recognized songs. The band's active period from 1979 to 1993 saw extensive touring, particularly in Central Europe, where they performed at major festivals and venues alongside notable acts like Miles Davis and Nirvana. They achieved chart success with the album Koli (2010), which peaked at Number 1 on the World Music Charts Europe. They also released the album Hali in 2019, followed by Lumo in 2025.
