Biography

Born in Liège, Belgium in 1958, Philippe Pierlot is a viola da gamba and baryton player, teacher and conductor. He is best known as one of his country's leading specialists in historically informed performance. At the age of 12, he already expressed interested in early music, learning to play the guitar, the lute, and the recorder. He studied the viola da gamba under fellow Belgian musician Wieland Kujiken. Philippe Pierlot founded the Ricercar Consort ensemble in 1980 with violinist François Fernandez and keyboardist Bernard Foccroulle. He has also recorded vocal works by Nicolaus Bruhns and the complete works by Matthias Weckmann. Philippe Pierlot taught at the Maastricht Conservatory and the Hochschule für Musik in Trossingen before becoming the professor of viola da gamba at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague and the Royal Conservatory of Brussels 4.
