Biography
Philippe McKenzie, born on October 26, 1953, in Maliotenam, Quebec, was an Innu singer-songwriter. He began playing the guitar at age 13 and joined the group Tamtam Boys in the early 1970s. In 1984, McKenzie co-founded the festival Innu Nikamu, one of the most significant music and art festivals for Indigenous peoples in North America. This festival took place annually in Maliotenam and was pivotal in the development of contemporary Innu music. McKenzie released several albums including Mistashipu, La Grande Rivière and Great River all in 1983. In 2014, the Innu Nikamu festival celebrated its 30th anniversary and also marked McKenzie's retirement from public life. Philippe McKenzie passed away on July 12, 2024.
