Phil Kline (born February 10, 1953) is an American contemporary classical and experimental composer, sound artist, and guitarist from Akron, Ohio. After graduating from Columbia University in 1975, Kline attended the Mannes College of Music and performed in the New York City art punk scene. He was a member of the bands Dark Day and The Del-Byzanteens and toured with the Glenn Branca Ensemble. Kline is recognized for the sound installations "Bachman's Warbler" (1990) and "Unsilent Night" (1992), the latter of which became an annual public performance in over 116 cities. His works include the song cycles Zippo Songs (2004) and Out Cold (2012), and the opera Tesla. Klineâs compositions have been performed at Lincoln Center and the Barbican Centre. The New York Times described his music as having the tonal richness of Samuel Barber. His studio albums include Glow in the Dark (1998) and John the Revelator (2009).
