Biography

American rock band Phantom Planet, formed in 1994 in Los Angeles. The original lineup included Alex Greenwald on vocals and rhythm guitar, Darren Robinson on lead guitar, Sam Farrar on bass guitar, Jason Schwartzman on drums, and Jacques Brautbar on lead guitar. Phantom Planet was named after a 1961 B-movie called The Phantom Planet. The band initially played in the Hollywood area before signing with Geffen Records in 1997 and releasing their debut album, Phantom Planet Is Missing, in 1998. Their first single, "So I Fall Again", was released to promote the soundtrack Sabrina the Teenage Witch: The Album. Following a merger at Geffen Records, Phantom Planet signed with Epic Records in 2001 and released their second album, The Guest , which included the track "California". This song became notable for being featured as the theme song for the TV series The O.C. in late 2003. The band's third album, Phantom Planet, was released in 2004, marking a shift towards a garage rock sound and featuring Jeff Conrad on drums following Schwartzman's departure to pursue an acting career. In 2008, after signing with Fueled by Ramen, Phantom Planet released their fourth studio album, Raise the Dead. The band announced a hiatus in November of that year. Phantom Planet reunited in 2019 and has continued performing since.
