American guitarist, composer and producer best known as a founding member of R.E.M., Peter Buck was born on December 6, 1956 in Berkeley, California. He grew up in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Roswell (Georgia), then Atlanta, where he attended university, continuing his studies in Athens. As a student at the University of Georgia and a salesman at Wuxtry Records, he met Michael Stipe, with whom he founded the group R.E.M., completed by Mike Mills and Bill Berry. Active until its breakup in 2011, Buck co-wrote most of the tracks for the successful alternative rock band. Alongside R.E.M., he was involved in many other projects: as early as 1984 he co-founded Hindu Love Gods with Berry, Mills and Warren Zevon, releasing an album in 1990; in 1989 he joined Robyn Hitchcock and The Egyptians for the Queen Elvis album and collaborated regularly with Hitchcock thereafter ; he has been playing with The Minus 5, a collective led by Scott McCaughey, since 1993, as well as with Tuatara, a group formed in 1996 that blends rock and world influences; in 2001 he joined The Baseball Project, created by McCaughey, Steve Wynn and Linda Pitmon, which released several albums from 2008 to 2020. He also co-founded The No Ones with McCaughey and Arne Kjelsrud Mathisen in 2017. As a solo artist, he released the albums Peter Buck (2012), I Am Back to Blow Your Mind Once Again (2014) and Warzone Earth (2015). A sought-after producer, he has worked on albums by The Replacements(Let It Be, 1984), Uncle Tupelo(March 16-20, 1992), The Jayhawks(Tomorrow the Green Grass, 1995) and The Decemberists(The King Is Dead, 2011). After a joint album with Joseph Arthur under the name Arthur Buck in 2018, he began an ongoing collaboration with Luke Haines, former leader of The Auteurs, Baader Meinhof and Black Box Recorder. Together, they produced the albums Beat Poetry for Survivors (2020), All the Kids Are Super Bummed Out (2022) and Going Down to the River... To Blow My Mind (2025). Peter Buck is renowned for his jangle pop guitar playing, inherited from The Byrds.
