Biography
Beyond its fanciful name, Hindu Love Gods is a supergroup formed by Warren Zevon and his friends from R.E.M., guitarist Peter Buck, bassist Mike Mills and drummer Bill Berry. Hailing from Athens, Georgia, they were formed in 1984 with organist Bryan Cook as a recreational group whose repertoire consisted of blues covers. After three local concerts, the second of which featured R.E.M. singer Michael Stipe, the band went into the studio to record "Gonna Have a Good Time Tonight", a cover of The Easybeats and the original "Narrator". Returning in 1986 for a charity concert followed by a tour, as well as the sessions for Zevon's Sentimental Hygiene album, the project gained momentum with a contract for Giant Records and the recording of the homonymous album, released in October 1990, featuring between two blues classics a version of Prince's hit "Raspberry Beret", which reached number 23 in the Modern Rock charts. As for the album itself, it didn't make it past Billboard's 168th position, of little interest to the public, but was nevertheless reissued in vinyl format for Record Store Day in 2025. Meanwhile, Warren Zevon passed away on September 7, 2003, at the age of 56.
