Biography
Jean McClain, known professionally as Pepper Mashay, was born on March 8, 1953, in Muncie, Indiana. She is an American soul, house, and dance music singer-songwriter whose musical influences include Janis Joplin, Joni Mitchell, and Bob Dylan. In her twenties, she left Indiana to pursue a music career. Mashay's breakthrough came with the release of "Something to Feel" in 1995, which was picked up by Island Records. Her voice is notably featured on Barry Harris' track "Dive in the Pool" from the album Dive In The Pool (2000), which gained popularity through its inclusion in the television series Queer as Folk. Throughout the late 1990s and early 2000s, she released several successful singles, including "Happiness" (1997), "Step into My Life" (1999), and "Send Me an Angel" (2005). Mashay achieved her first solo Number 1 on the U.S. Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart with "Lost Yo Mind" in 2006.
