Paul Laurence, born Paul Lawrence Jones III on 29 November 1958 in the United States of America, emerged as a soul singer and songwriter whose early musical foundation was shaped in Harlemâs White Rock Baptist Church, where he learned piano from Valerie Simpson of Ashford & Simpson. His initial breakthrough came in the early 1980s when he wrote and produced several R&B hits for contemporaries such as Freddieâ¯Jackson and Stephanieâ¯Mills, including "Rock Me Tonight (For Old Times Sake)" (1985) and "You're Puttin' A Rush on Me" (1987). In 1985, Laurence signed with Capitol Records and released his debut album Haven't You Heard, featuring the single "She's Not a Sleaze" that reached number 50 on the R&B chart. He followed with the single "Strung Out" in 1986, and later Underexposed in 1989, which yielded singles "Cut The Crap" and "Make My Baby Happy". Laurenceâs songwriting credits extended to chartâtopping tracks for Lilloâ¯Thomas, Meli'saâ¯Morgan, and Melbaâ¯Moore, earning him multiple Number 1 R&B positions between 1985 and 1991. His contributions also appeared on soundtracks for Def by Temptation (1990) and Spike Leeâs Do the Right Thing.
