Patrice Munsel was an American coloratura soprano who was born as Patrice Beverly Munsil in 1925. She studied in New York City under Giacomo Spadoni and made a professional debut at the Metropolitan Opera in 1943 as Philine in Ambroise Thomasâs Mignon. At age 18, she became the youngest singer to debut at the Metropolitan Opera, where she performed 225 times. Munsel is famous for her roles as Adele in Die Fledermaus and Despina in Così fan tutte. Her career included appearances on television programs such as The Patrice Munsel Show (1957) and the variety series The Bell Telephone Hour. In 1953, she portrayed the title character in the film Melba, which chronicled the life of the singer Nellie Melba. Her discography includes the studio recording Selections from The King and I (1952). She retired from performing in 2008 and died in 2016.
