Biography

The Oregon Symphony, founded as the Portland Symphony Society in 1896, is an American symphony orchestra based in Portland, Oregon. The ensemble gave its first concert at the Marquam Grand Theatre on October 30, 1896, conducted by W.H. Kinross. By 1899, the orchestra was performing annual concert series and made its first state tour in 1902. Carl Denton played a pivotal role in transforming the society into a more structured organization. The orchestra faced financial challenges, including a near-closure during the Great Depression and a suspension of operations in 1938. It was reorganized in 1947 as a permanent professional group. The Oregon Symphony has released several notable albums, including Bravura (1987), Apocalypse (Menotti) / Meditations on Ecclesiastes (Dello Joio) (1992), and Spirit of the American Range (2015).
