Biography

Ofra Harnoy is an Israeli-Canadian cellist born on January 31, 1965, in Hadera. She moved to Toronto in 1971 and began cello lessons at age six with her father, Jacob Harnoy. Her teachers included Vladimir Orloff, William Pleeth, Pierre Fournier, Jacqueline du Pré, and Mstislav Rostropovich. Harnoy made her professional debut as a soloist at age ten and had solo-orchestral and recital debuts at Carnegie Hall in 1982. She performed the 1984 North American premiere of the Bliss cello concerto and the 1985 world premiere of the Offenbach cello concerto. Upon signing with RCA Victor Red Seal in 1987, she became the first Canadian classical instrumentalist since Glenn Gould to gain an exclusive worldwide contract with a major label. Her recordings included Vivaldi: Complete Cello Concertos (2005), Back to Bach (2019), and Elgar & Lalo Cello Concertos (2023). Harnoy is a five-time Juno Award winner and a Member of the Order of Canada. She is married to producer Mike Herriott.
