Biography

Alternative rock group Oblivion Dust was formed in Japan in 1995. Originally founded by Addict of the Trip Minds drummer Taka Motomura and former Simple Minds bassist Derek Forbes, the duo recruited lead guitarist Kazuhito K.A.Z. Iwaike, and vocalist Ken Lloyd and began working on original material. The band recorded music in Los Angeles but by 1996, Derek Forbes had exited the band, which was just the beginning of a string of personnel changes during the band’s existence. Oblivion Dust released their debut album, Looking for Elvis, in 1997. The group’s sophomore album, Misery Days, followed in 1998, but the band didn’t achieve significant chart success until their third album, Reborn (1999), and the hit singles “You,” “Goodbye,” and “Crazy.” Oblivion Dust released their fourth album, Butterfly Head, in 2000, which reached Number 50 on the albums chart. Bassist Rikiji Masuda left the group in 2000, and, after a series of live shows, Oblivion Dust officially broke up at the end of 2001. To celebrate the group’s musical legacy, they released the Radio Songs compilation and a CD box set containing 11 singles plus a live album. Oblivion Dust’s members pursued other interests for several years, but in 2007, K.A.Z., Ken Lloyd, and Rikiji Masuda reunited. The group released their self-titled album in 2008 and followed that release with 2012’s 9 Gates for Bipolar, which featured singer Anna Tsuchiya. Not as prolific as they were in their early days, Oblivion Dust then released the mini-albums Dirt (2016) and Shadows (2022).
