Biography

Novalis was a German rock band formed in 1971, named after the poet Novalis. The group originated from Hamburg and initially consisted of Jürgen Wenzel, Heino Schünzel, Lutz Rahn, and Hartwig Biereichel. They began by placing an advertisement in the Hamburger Abendblatt seeking members, which led to the formation of Mosaik, later renamed Novalis. Their debut album, Banished Bridge, was released in 1973. The following year, guitarist Detlef Job joined while Wenzel left, with Schünzel and Job taking over vocals. In 1975, they transitioned to German lyrics under producer Achim Reichel. Notable albums include Brandung (1977) and Vielleicht bist du ein Clown? (1978). The band's concept album Flossenengel, released in 1979, supported the World Wildlife Fund. Novalis disbanded in the early 1980s after several lineup changes, concluding with the album Nach uns die Flut in 1985. The band disbanded in the same year.
