Notsensibles were formed in 1978 in Burnley, England, by Michael “Haggis” Hargreaves (vocals), Steven “Sage” Hartley (guitar), Roger “Rog Sensible” Rawlinson (keyboards), Gary Brown (bass), and Kevin “Ploppy” Hemingway (drums). Their first single, "Death to Disco", was released in April 1979 and set the stage for the band's satirical punk approach. In December 1979 the group issued "I'm in Love with Margaret Thatcher", a tongue‑in‑cheek track that reached Number 8 on the UK Indie Chart in January 1980 and later appeared on the Instant Classic album, which peaked at Number 16 on the same chart in March 1980. Subsequent singles "I Thought You Were Dead" and "I am the Bishop" charted at Number 29 and Number 45 respectively, but the band disbanded in March 1982 after limited commercial success. A 1994 compilation, Instant Punk Classics, was released by Anagram Records. The group re‑formed briefly for a 1996 festival appearance and permanently in 2005 with the original lineup. The single "I'm in Love with Margaret Thatcher" was featured in the 2011 film The Iron Lady and re‑issued in 2013, reaching Number 35 on the UK Singles Chart on 12 April 2013 following a campaign by supporters. The band performed at the 2016 and 2017 Rebellion Festivals in Blackpool.
