Biography

Nnenna Freelon, born Chinyere Nnenna Pierce on July 28, 1954 in Cambridge, Massachusetts, is an American jazz singer. She began singing extensively in her community and at local churches from a young age. In 1990, Freelon met Ellis Marsalis at the Southern Arts Federation's jazz meeting, which marked a significant turning point in her career. Two years later, she was signed to Columbia Records and released her debut album Nnenna Freelon in 1992. After being dropped by Columbia in 1994, she signed with Concord Records in 1996 and continued to release albums including Shaking Free, Maiden Voyage, and Soulcall. Throughout her career, Freelon has collaborated with notable artists such as Ray Charles, Ellis Marsalis, Al Jarreau. She is also known for her Babysong workshops, which emphasize the importance of singing to children for brain development.
