Biography

A British singer-songwriter of Irish and Barbadian descent on her mother's side and Turkish on her father's, Nilüfer Yanya was born on May 11, 1995 and grew up in London, where she trained as a classical pianist before turning to electric guitar with her teacher Dave Okumu. Influenced by alternative rock, she performs live and records her first demos until the release of her first EP Small Crimes (2016), under the independent label ATO Records. Two more follow, Plant Feed (2017) and Do You Like Pain? (2018), before the release in early 2019 of the album Miss Universe, which brings together her latest compositions in an energetic, feverish style. The first in a series of critically-acclaimed albums to appear in the year-end charts. 2022 saw the release of Painless, which reached number 86 in the UK charts to rave reviews. To promote the album, the singer opened for Adele in Hyde Park, then for Roxy Music on Bryan Ferry's 50th anniversary tour. She collaborates with the Bombay Bycycle Club and works on her third album My Method Actor (2024), unveiled after a series of singles including "Like I Say (Runaway)", "Call It Love" and "Mutations". Produced by Will Archer for the Ninja Tune label, it reached No. 1 in the independent charts and No. 53 in the overall UK sales and listening charts.
