Biography

Cut Copy, an Australian electronic music group, was formed in 2001 in Melbourne by Dan Whitford. Initially a solo project of Whitford, who was educated at Scotch College and studied graphic design at Monash University, the band evolved into a full-fledged group with Tim Hoey on guitars, Ben Browning on bass guitar, and Mitchell Scott on drums. Whitford's early interest in dance music led him to produce his first single "1981" under Modular Recordings. The band released their debut EP I Thought of Numbers in 2006, which included remixes on vinyl. Their debut album Bright Like Neon Love, released in April 2004, featured the singles "Future" and "Saturdays". In 2008, Cut Copy achieved breakthrough success with their second album In Ghost Colours, which included well-known singles "Lights & Music" and "Hearts on Fire". The band continued to release albums such as Zonoscope in February 2011 and Free Your Mind in November 2013. Cut Copy has also produced mixes for labels like Fabric, including the mix album Fabriclive.29, released in September 2006. Throughout their career, they have toured extensively, supporting acts such as Franz Ferdinand and The Presets, and playing numerous European festivals. They followed in the studio with the albums January Tape (2016), Haiku from Zero (2017), Freeze, Melt (2020), and Moments (2025).
