Biography

Originally a trio formed in 1988 with DJs John Halnon and Kevin Harper, Nightmares on Wax is now a project led by its creator, English producer George Evelyn, also known as DJ E.A.S.E. Born in Leeds on January 15, 1970, his passion for soul, hip-hop and electro led him to form The Soul City Rockers collective, which welcomed John Halnon and then Kevin Harper. The trio, signed to Warp Records, recorded several tracks before releasing their first album, A Word of Science: The First and Final Chapter, in 1991, representative of the birth of trip-hop. Without his two collaborators, but with the support of programmer Robin Taylor-Firth, George Evelyn produced in 1995, still under the name Nightmares on Was, the double album Smokers Delight (1995), considered one of the fifty best records of the genre by Fact magazine - which ranked it fifteenth - and took part ten years later in the famous book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die. Since this classic, Nightmares on Wax has released the following albums for the same label: Carboot Soul (1999), Mind Elevation (2002), In a Space Outta Sound (2006), Thought So (2008), Feelin' Good (2013), Shape the Future (2018) and Shout Out! To Freedom... (2021). In 2014, a selection of tracks resulted in the compilation Now Is the Time. At the same time, George Evelyn/Nightmares on Wax has made a name for itself in the canon of the electro genre, with mix compilations DJ-Kicks for !K7 Records (2000) and LateNightTales for Azuli Records (2003), as well as My Definition (2006) for Apace Music, designed to showcase the artist's influences and fetish tracks. Nightmares on Wax has also fashioned other compilations in the same style for Warp Records with the Wax on Records series (2008-2010) and the albums Coming Home (2009), Wax da Beach Ibiza - Season 1 (2010, enhanced by a double CD the following year for the Ministry of Sound label) or the double Back to Mine (2019). 2023 saw the release of the predominantly ambient Re-Imagineering Meditation Mix, followed in 2025 by Echo45 Sound System, a collection of dub with multiple guests.
