British alternative post-punk stalwarts The Nightingales were formed in Birmingham in 1979 by former members of punk band The Prefects. Led by singer and lyricist Robert Lloyd, the band forged a cult reputation in the 1980s, not least thanks to the support of renowned radio host John Peel in his BBC Sessions. After a hiatus between 1986 and 2004, they returned with renewed energy and prolific output. While the first period brought together the albums Pigs on Purpose (1982), Hysterics (1983) and In the Good Old Country Way (1986), the next proved more prolific with successive releases of Out of True (2006), No Love Lost (2012), Mind Over Matter (2015), Perish the Thought (2018) and The Awful Truth (2025). Since 2017, the line-up has consisted of Robert Lloyd, James Smith (guitar), Andreas Schmid (bass) and Fliss Kitson (drums).
