Biography

Cantores de Híspalis was a Spanish flamenco and sevillanas ensemble formed in 1977 in Salamanca. The group was established by Pascual González and relocated to Seville to finalize its lineup with José Antonio Rúa and Juan Luis Calceteiro. The trio released the debut studio recording Cosas de mi tierra in 1978. Following the addition of Rafael Ojeda “Falín,” the group performed with the London Philharmonic Orchestra. The ensemble received the Gold Premium “La Voz de su Amo” award for the recording Danza (1987). After Rúa and Ojeda left in 1988, they were replaced by Carlos and Mario Ruiz. González resumed activity with the ensemble in 2000 for the production Sevilla reza cantando. Its discography included La Gran Fiesta de las sevillanas, 35 años de éxitos (2010) and Tierra (2019). Ojeda died in 2008, followed by Rúa in 2013. González died on February 6, 2022.
