Biography

The New York Jazz Quartet was an American jazz group formed in 1971 by pianist Roland Hanna. The initial lineup included Hubert Laws on flute, Ron Carter on double bass, and Billy Cobham on drums. In 1974, Frank Wess replaced Laws, Ben Riley took over on drums, and George Mraz joined on double bass. The quartet released their debut album, In Concert in Japan, in 1975 under the Salvation label. Subsequent albums included Song of the Black Knight (1978), Blues for Sarka (1978), and Oasis (1981). The group's repertoire featured original compositions that highlighted the technical skills of its members. The New York Jazz Quartet continued to perform until the early 1980s.
