Biography

Inspired by the music of trumpeter Don Cherry, Scandinavian jazz trio The Thing teamed up with his stepdaughter Neneh Cherry in 2011 for an album of free-form, avant-garde experimentation. Far removed from Neneh's days as a Buffalo Stance, 1980s urban pop star, The Cherry Thing (2012) covers tracks by Suicide, Iggy And The Stooges and MF Doom, as well as playing with all manner of different sounds and genres. There's also a reworking of Don Cherry's Golden Heart and new compositions that include African rhythms, electronic tricks, punk spirit and Miles Davis-style sonic weirdness that has drawn comparisons with modern jazz stars such as Polar Bear and Four Tet. The collaboration seems to have given Cherry a new lease of life and allowed her to confront the death of her mother and father on record for the first time, and after touring together across Europe the group announced plans to work together again on an annual basis.
