Biography

Born in Yozgat on July 24, 1948, Turkish singer and actor Tahir Nejat Özyılmazel—known professionally as Neco—entered music in the mid-1960s after joining Altınparmaklar Orchestra (1964) and working as a vocalist with other Istanbul dance bands in that era. He began issuing records in the 1970s, with early singles including “Gülmeyi Unutan Adam / Ne Bu Halimiz Böyle” (1974) and follow-ups such as “Onlar / Pam Pam” (1975), building a pop repertoire that later fed into albums like Neco Mucizesi (1977), Dört Mevsim (1979), Bugün ve Yarınlara (1984), Hayallerimi Bırak (1989), and Hafif Hafif (1991). A major career milestone arrived when he represented Turkey at the Eurovision Song Contest in 1982 with “Hani?”, placing 15th. Alongside his recording work, Neco maintained a long stage and screen profile: he appeared in major musicals (including productions of Hair and later Evita) and, from 2002 to 2004, acted in the TV sitcom Tatlı Hayat. In the 1980s and beyond he also released notable collaborations, including “Bir Sevgi Yeter” with Nükhet Duru (1985) and “Küçük Bir Aşk Masalı” with Bengü (2006), extending his catalog beyond his classic-era hits.
