Biography

Natalie Leota Henderson Hinderas (born 1927) was an American classical pianist and composer from Oberlin, Ohio. Hinderas earned a degree from Oberlin Conservatory at age 18 before completing post-graduate work at the Juilliard School of Music and the Philadelphia Conservatory. In 1954, Hinderas made her debut at Town Hall and subsequently toured Europe, Africa, and Asia. She signed a contract with NBC in the mid-1950s to perform recitals and variety shows. In 1971, Hinderas became the first Black musician to perform a subscription concert with the Philadelphia Orchestra. She promoted works by Black composers, including William Grant Still and George Walker, and recorded the album Piano Music by African-American Composers (1971). Hinderas served as a professor at Temple University and Howard University. She received an honorary doctorate from Swarthmore College. Hinderas died on July 22, 1987.
